The size of the character's pupils can be determined by comparing it with either of the following:

• The character's source material esp. original characters and/or copyrighted material
• If the depiction is a deviation from a source material (ex: Noelle Holiday original pixel sprite vs. non-pixel depictions of said character), consider the general depiction of the character in e621 instead.
• If the post is part of a series of images esp. a comic under one artist, consider looking at the preceding image and/or the artist's general depiction of the character with respect to the source material and general e621 consensus.

Dilated Pupils

The character has dilated_pupils if it is depicted with bigger pupils than normal and, more often than not, the dilation of the pupils is triggered by a stimuli ("light, sexual arousal, emotions or some other factor.")

Constricted Pupils

On the other hand, the character has constricted_pupils if it is depicted with smaller pupils than normal and, similarly, the pupil's constriction is triggered by a stimuli as above

Big Pupils (as intended)

It could also be possible that the character depicted has big pupils as intended and their eyes are not necessarily dilated. With this, we can remove the dilated_pupils tag; since big_pupils is already implicated by dilated_pupils, this tag change is sufficient for this scenario.

Example of black eyes with white irises are the characters Golden Freddy and Puppet from the FNAF franchise
